I have the best friends in the world.

We’ve been swamped at work lately. They wouldn’t let me wear the Hello Kitty one.

Go bang your head against the wall. Only boring people are bored.

The first duty of everybody in life is to realize that they’re a piece of shit. […] Once you realize you’re a piece of shit it’s not so hard to take. Because then you don’t have this feeling that you’re a good person all the time. And let me tell you something. Feeling that you’re a good person all the time is like having a brand new car with no scratches on it. It’s a real responsibility which is almost impossible to live up to. Being a piece of shit and then occasionally doing something that’s good and true is a much easier place to be. I think that’s really important, and I always try to raise my kids to understand that they’re not that terrific.

If you’re not dispossessed, why make art? If you’re not feeling pretty rejected, you’d probably just be a little more content and not have this need to save your life making something.

I thought of this excerpt earlier this week, and today I went rummaging through my tattered edition of Little Women to find it. As much as we make fun of dudes, I’m coming to the conclusion that we are just as messed up as them.

Our trip home was surprisingly pleasant. Redband iced coffees on a daily basis, many hours with Little Brother, a simple Iowa wedding, old friends we hadn’t seen since we first left, $1 beers and $5 cocktails. Shit, we almost moved back for the cheap booze alone.
